Chapter 18

Veronica is over at Derrick’s place watching a movie on the Lifetime channel drinking appletini’s “Derrick, it must have been fate that brought us together even though you wrecked my car.”
“I feel the same way about you too veronica. It’s like we were supposed to get into that accident like it was our fate.”
“Well Derrick I just want to let you know that I have had a long hard life and I am so glad that you are here now to complete my life and make it better. I guess I had to have some bad things happen in my life to know when I have something good.”
“Well like it was explained to me, how do you know when you have something good in your life if you don’t have something bad to compare it to.”
“Derrick, you mean the world to me and now I can’t imagine my life with out you.”
“Hey baby look at me… until you came along, my life was so hard. My feelings were gone and my heart was stone cold. I never thought I would ever feel or trust another woman like this again. And I am ready to take our relationship to the next level.”
“Stop, before you go on… there are some things you need to know about me_”
“Shhh, I know what your going to say. Look, everyone has a past and everyone has excess baggage. Its okay, really I understand.”
“No, my situation is a little different. Yes I do have a past, but there are circumstances behind it_”
“What are you going to tell me that you have a long lost child some where? You were abused as a child or adopted at a young age and you have issues. Just tell me I can handle it.”
“Well to be honest with you, I…
“Saved by the bell. Excuse me while I get the phone. Hello?”
“Yo Derrick, do you have a minute? I really need to talk to you right now.”
“Well actually I was trying to have a serious conversation with my girl.”
“Please it will only take a minute, I’m sitting in your drive way.”
“What! Dawg ya killing me!”
“Thanks for coming out.”
“This better be good, I was bonding with my boo. And I was trying to take it to that next level with her.”
“ Nigga I know you aint trying to commit to anybody! What ever happened to the man, the myth, the legend? I can’t be held down; no one can contain my shit!”
“It looks like those days are over; I think I’ve found the one.”
“With her, Veronica? Just how well do you know her anyway? Yo, just like you be telling me. Do more research, well take your own advice and do more research.”
“Nah, nah, nah. I can feel it, she is the one.”
“What makes her the one, its not like she was the first piece of ass you got!”
“Is this the reason you called me out here?”
“No, actually I think something is going on with Steph.”
“Like what?”
“I’m not sure. She seems different; she looks different and talks different. I feel like I’m losing her.”
“Well what difference does it make? You were always out hoeing on her anyway!”
“Yes, I know. But now she seems different, like she’s a different person and I don’t know how to relate to her now.”
“So what are you going to do?”
“I don’t know, I’m going to have to find a way to reach her somehow.”
“Well think about it and get back to me, I still have some other business to tend to.”
“Alright, you go take care of that. Thanks for listening and good luck.” Derrick walks into the house and doesn’t see Veronica he calls her name and there’s no answer. He sees a note on the table. Derrick, sorry to leave on short notice. I let myself out the back; I didn’t want to interrupt your intense conversation with your brother. We really need to talk; I just want to clear my head first. I will talk to you later. Damn I wonder what is it that she has to say, can it be that bad? I tell her that I want to take it to the next level and she withdrawals from me. I have to find her she can’t leave me hanging like this. I called her all night long and most of the next day. Damn she’s not answering either of her phones…“Veronica, if your home please pick up, we need to talk.” Then the phone rings. “Hey baby I’ve been trying to reach you all day!”
“Man you better back da hell up, this is Jamal!”
“Sorry_, I thought you were Veronica.”
“What’s up with that, did you work it out with her?”
“No, she slipped out the back door and we never got a chance to finish our conversation. How is everything with you and Steph?”
“I don’t know she never came home. Have you talked to James? I talked to him earlier today and he was supposed to call me back, but I never heard from him. He’s been acting a little strange lately.”
“Well I saw him the other day and he seemed a little jittery, you think he’s on drugs?”
“No, I can’t see him doing that. Besides, he had an uncle cracked out and he overdosed. And I kinda think it scared him away from drugs.”
“Yo Jamal I’ll talk to you later, its Veronica on the other line. Hey baby, what’s going on I have been trying to reach you all day!”
“I know, look I have a lot to talk about. I knew this day was going to come. I should have been more prepared for it.”
“What day? What are you talking about?”
“Derrick you know how people say, you really don’t know a person until you’ve lived with them.”
“Yeah, but_”
“Well sometimes you can live with a person and still not know them.”
“Huh?”
“Look Derrick, I don’t know if I’m the right person for you.”
“What! Look I told you how I feel about you, so why are you saying this?”
“When I was a child, we were very poor and my mother_”
“Look, what does this have to do with anything?”
“Derrick, please! You have to hear me out. You really need to feel me on this to understand me. My mother worked two jobs to take care of my two younger brothers and me. She could not afford a real babysitter, so she always left us with some ole drunk neighbor across the hall. Often we spent the night, due to her getting home so late. We were already sleep. Well it turns out that our neighbor wasn’t just a drunk. He was a child molester. He fondled with me and told me that if I ever said anything he would kill my mother, he also molested my brothers. So, I kept my mouth shut for years, until I just couldn’t keep silent about it any longer. He was watching me and my brothers one evening. He was in the kitchen drinking vodka and cooking. He called me into the kitchen to help out while my brothers watched cartoons on TV. He wanted me to help him cut up potatoes for dinner, but what he really wanted was for me to give him a hand job and play hide the baton, if you know what I mean. When I refused, he got mad and threatened to kill me, I grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him in the chest. I told the cops that he was drinking and playing with the knife trying to do tricks and he fell stabbing himself in the chest. I was scared and pulled the knife out his chest. I don’t think the officer bought the story, but he kinda knew what was happening. He died at the hospital, the cops ruled it an accident.”
“Wow! You had such a horrific childhood. We can get you counseling to help cope with the traumas of your childhood, it sounds like you were traumatized about the whole ordeal.”
“No you don’t understand! The damage has been done. It’s too late for me.”
“I don’t understand?”
“Derrick, I guess there’s only one way to say what I have to say. You know how we_, only had oral sex.”
“Yes, what are you trying to say?”
“The reason is because I didn’t think we were ready to go all the way in our relationship.”
“Please stop with the charades! Say what’s on your mind!”
“Okay, I had my name changed from Victor to Veronica…”
“You what!!!”
“I used to be a man and had a complete sex change and I take hormone pills. I wanted to tell you, but I didn‘t know how.”
“You fucking bitch how could you deceive me like that. I better not ever see you again! I will fucking kill your ass!”
“Derrick, calm down! This is hard for me to. We can work through this, you said you loved me.”
“Fuck you! I said I loved you when I thought you were a woman! I’m going beat your bitch ass when I catch up to you!”
“Please, don’t do this to us.”
“Well if you would have been honest in the beginning we wouldn’t be in the situation we are in today! And I wouldn’t have to kill you.”
“Derrick I am so sorry to put you through all this.”
“You are marked for life; don’t ever let me catch you anywhere!” I hung up the phone. I sat there dazed, lightheaded and weak. How did I get from being so happy, to being so filled with rage in such a short amount of time? That bitch misunderstood my kindness for weakness. Jamal was right, I didn’t know that girl, boy, it after all. The first time I opened my heart up to someone in years and this is what I get into. A bunch of lies and deceit. It’s just going to get harder to ever open up again. I know not every woman is up to no good, but after you go through so much you can’t help but to classify them all together.
