Days 12 & 13: Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose

Day 12 - We had three male participants from A Step Forward, Inc. (ASF) in today's workshop. Of the three, one was new. At least two of the male and one of the female participants dropped out of the recovery program during the ten-weeks. And there have been a few scheduling glitches that have caused other participants to miss sessions. This weekend, the women participants are unable to participate in the last two sessions as they are attending an out-of-town spiritual retreat. During this sessio… Continue

Day 11: Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose Workshop Series

We are coming down to our last few sessions. Our session on Friday, October 10th was somewhat difficult as quite a few of the workshop participants were physically and mentally unable to focus due to changes in medication and/or other personal issues that impacted their participation in the session. We had a total of seven participants at the session. Of the seven participants, 5 were returning A Step Forward, Inc. (ASF) clients and 2 were new ASF clients. We were also blessed with a visit from… Continue

Day 10 - Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose Workshop Series

Today's session included five participants and one guest. Our focus for this session was on writing creative essays. I shared copies of The Urbanite Magazine with workshop participants, and we read through all of the creative essays. I also took the time to define for the participants the meaning of a creative essay and to explain the writing challenge sponsored by The Urbanite Magazine. Participants… Continue

Day 9: Life Lessons Writing for A Purpose

We had only four participants today. The writing class consists mostly of men and the majority of them went out-of-town to a spiritual retreat. We still had four participants in the class. We spent the bulk of the session discovering where they were in their 12 Step NA Recovery process. Each of them identified which step they were on and reflected in their journals about that particular step. I also asked each of them to describe in writing what they are doing to work the 12 Step NA Recovery pro… Continue

Days 7 & 8: Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose Workshop Series

Day 7 and there is still a core group of about six or seven participants who come to the sessions regularly. YES! We talked about the importance of the journal writing and discussed ways for them to stay on track. On this Friday session, The participants read and discussed the short story, "Salvation" from my book Psalms of the Daughter. I asked the participants to work together to write their own short story as a group about anything, they ended up writing a short essay about the recovery progr… Continue

Day 6: Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose Workshop Series

Due to the weather on last week, we postponed the Saturday session. However, we were able to meet on yesterday (Friday, 9/12) for our sixth writing session. Instead of meeting at one of A Step Forward, Inc.'s (ASF) transitional houses, we held the workshop in ASF's computer lab. We spent a good portion of the session listening to the great Gill Scott-Heron and comparing his style/message with two spoken word cuts from the Nostradamus cd by Nas. It was an interesting discussion. We also t… Continue

Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose Workshop: Day 5

Today was all about the spoken word. We listened to a variety of spoken word artists on cd. From Brother to the Night off of the Love Jones Sound Track to a Prisoner's Wife by Asha Bandele, we heard a variety of styles. I shared a couple of my own poems from my book, Psalms of the Daughter. Part 2 of the spoken word session is tomorrow. We will discuss Gill Scott Heron. I'll keep you posted! Continue

Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose Workshop Series: Days 3 & 4

We have a steady group of about eight - ten men and women from A Step Forward, Inc. who come out regularly to the Life Lessons: Writing for a Purpose Workshops. It has been sort of tough working with some of the participants because they aren't used to writing. I provide guided prompts and other types of writing assignments to help the participants structure their writing and to help make connections to their recovery process. It has been somewhat difficult for some, but what I appreciate most f… Continue

Day Two - It's On!

So we only had eight participants show up for our session on yesterday. We lost six people, but gained two new people. The six who did return completed their writing assignments in their journals. Almost all of them shared with the group. Our focus for the last couple of sessions has been on narrative writing. Last session, they had to reflect in their journals on what it would take for them to live a life of significance. Today, they developed their own personal mission statements. We had a few… Continue

Highlights from the First Session...What A Day!

A total of 12 men and woman clients of A Step Forward, Inc. attended the first session of the LIFE LESSONS: Writing for A Purpose Workshop on Friday afternoon. Between slices of pizza and buffalo wings, participants worked on a brainstorming activity that helped them gather ideas for their first journal writing assignment. Almost everyone was actively engaged during the session - sharing their thoughts and offering comments. A few were struggling and I think that's o.k. and I told them so. The a… Continue

Pre-Workshop Jitters...

So, it's the night before the Life Lessons Writing Workshop in Baltimore, and I'm asking myself what did I get myself into. LOL I'm volunteering 10 weeks of my life (time which I can't really afford right now) to a project that I'm not even sure if the participants in the substance abuse program will receive positively. I do feel encouraged that I had the opportunity to meet up with a few participants earlier today who seemed really excited but I am a little leary of the fact that they have to g… Continue

Writing for a Purpose: The Life Lessons Writing Project

Over the years, I have found great comfort in the art of writing. As a matter of fact, writing poetry and short stories have become two of my favorite pastimes. Although I hope one day to enjoy the leisure of writing full-time, I currently enjoy no such pleasure. I split my time working as (1) an adult literacy instructor at several Baltimore-based adult education programs; (2) a consultant for several for profit and non-profit organizations; (3) a writer/editor at a new Internet-based printing… Continue

Yep, the power of "facts" on the internet. Ain't it grand? People take forwards as gospel. Do you all also believe that Barack Obama shouldn't be president because he's not an American citizen? It' says he's not on the internet! I kinda wanted this…
