I know you heard me
walking around here
saying the samething
for the last past five days!
You act like you don't hear me
when I'm talking all softly to you,
now that I'm yelling,
you seem amazed!
Then you start screamming and shouting,
calling me all kind'ah names,
before you start crying!
Don't do that ma, please..

In my opinion, the phrase “coming-of-age” means different things to different people and age groups. Here are two questions to ponder: Is there a particular age we all reach that is supposed to be the grand number of maturity and wisdom? Do people considered as grown-ups reach that “magical age” where they know… Continue

I made it. Before I physically made it, I made it out with my mind.
While looking in the pit of my crack-head mother’s eyes, I made a conscious decision that I have evolved.
I am a testimony in progress, focused on my dream to become whatever I chose to be.
I hear it, but I don’t understand negative the words and thinking that has been placed on my life by hopeless and miserable niggas and bitches.
I am untouchable to people and systems that seek my… Continue

I have spent many a day in school listening to the pain our children have at the hands of Fathers who don't seem to understand the power of their absence. No greater time than the holidays when those actions hit home. This is a piece that speaks to the Promises not kept.. It might sting a little and fathers if your one that is mention in the poem today is never a bad day to start to reconnect with your children.
It was this… Continue

What a Man….What a Mighty Good Man
A Man in Transition by K.L. is a book of poems, stories and observations that will engage you from page one. Having known the author on a personal level, I knew what to expect from the book’s contents, however, nothing would prepare me for the joy K.L. brought to my spirit, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Before I get into my book review, I want to make a personal remark… Continue

Night Of Change By K.L. Belvin
From the past cries of “I Am A Man”
to the current cheers of “Yes We Can”
His God gifted light shined ever so bright
well into the cool November night.
The man who would fulfill the dream deferred
no longer would we be unheard.
The roars grew louder with when each state… Continue

A Dream Deferred
by Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
This poem was on my heart this morning so I though I would share it. This week has been the best of times and… Continue

I am dealing with some negatives right now. I have found that one of the most uncontrollable thing on this planet is the feelings of another person. You can only help that when the truth is revealed you don't lose too much emotionally, physically or financially..
To me its all a test and I am going to come through. Right now its a little dark, but my light is the Lord and even when I can't see I know he's there guiding me.. This storm shall… Continue

Due to the weather on last week, we postponed the Saturday session. However, we were able to meet on yesterday (Friday, 9/12) for our sixth writing session. Instead of meeting at one of A Step Forward, Inc.'s (ASF) transitional houses, we held the workshop in ASF's computer lab. We spent a good portion of the session listening to the great Gill Scott-Heron and comparing his style/message with two spoken word cuts from the Nostradamus
cd by Nas. It was an interesting… Continue
