A First-Mover on the Urban Lit Scene Speaks on "The Art of The Hustle"

The Art Of The Hustle

by Omar Tyree . . .

Relentless Aaron, one of the hardest-driving book selling phenoms out of the

New York City area called me up after doing considerable book sale numbers in

New Orleans at the Essence Music Festival over the 4th of July weekend, and

asked me if I wanted to join him in August for an "Author's Pavilion" in Atlanta at

the famous Bronner Brothers Hair Show. R.A.… Continue

Life Lessons Writing for a Purpose Workshop Series: Days 3 & 4

We have a steady group of about eight - ten men and women from A Step Forward, Inc. who come out regularly to the Life Lessons: Writing for a Purpose Workshops. It has been sort of tough working with some of the participants because they aren't used to writing. I provide guided prompts and other types of writing assignments to help the participants structure their writing and to help make connections to their recovery process. It has been somewhat difficult for some, but what I appreciate most… Continue

Greetings Family,

As a Digital Drummer, I'm always looking for something good to put on this virtual drum line...smile

Arlena Richardson, is a relatively new friend, I met on We Are Creative People (see www.wacptv.ning.com) I've watched this sister selfishly put out positive, proactive and empowering information for the last year.

Who is your God?

Joshua 24:18

Who is your God begs an answer from both believers and non-believers who must determine their answers truthfully. Our answers can be seen in our daily lives and where we placed God in our lives. Have you placed your God first in your life? Is your God the one true living God, the creator and sustainer of all life from beginning to end? Is your God the one who provides for all humanity’s need according to His riches and glory through His Son Christ Jesus? Is your God the… Continue

RarePoetiks

He too has strummed my pain with his fingers

Yet, my life was told through spoken-word

Not only on stage

But in books for his next subjects to admire

Like the prior pages

I am left for someone else to pick-up, blow

THEN

Try to comprehend

Like painter to object

He studied me

Turning me inside out

Analyzing

Memorizing

What's In a NAME?

(a healing poem)

I said, “I don’t really know her.”

Truth is, I’ve known her too well.

As we’ve spent all of our life together, occupying the same human shell.

Abused and confused, not understanding what was wrong.

Because it persisted for such a long time;

Its power had become too strong.

Neglected, rejected, abandoned and let down,

By those who were to love me and always be around.

This healing search began long ago; but, would… Continue

Ten Top Reasons Authors Need a Web Site

Ten Top Reasons Authors Need a Web Site

Judy Cullins c. 2006

You may think, "Why not let other web sites sell my book?"

Maybe you've already put your print book into POD and are listed on a web site. Many authors who think they are non-techie, do this. They may do this because it "sounds" cheaper than doing their own site and book delivery. But notice just how many sales and profits these POD author's get. Just listed with 20-40,000 other books and a few lines about your… Continue

Basic Business Practices

Well, I feel that we must apply the same standards that we would apply to any company or business providing products and services. I understand that many of us are just getting started with new ventures and we may not be up to speed on many of the business practices, but we have to be honest with our customers. As an African American, I believe we should seek to bring opportunities to our people, first, but only if they are of the right mind-set to take on the responsibilities.

I…

God knows my name and He knows yours, too!

She was suddenly hit hard. The unexpected impact sent her sprawling to her knees. She could hear the incessant sound of the rain, pelting against her large bedroom window. It was all a strange phenomenon, to her. Dark billowy clouds had gathered, hovering and intimidating. It was an remarkable sight. The howling winds were a frightening thing to hear. The ominous sound caused chills to dance over the lone woman’s slight frame. The forcefulness of the blow was numbing. There on her knees, she… Continue

Brother: Pay Attention and Listen...

He didn’t know she was fading before his very eyes,

He should have seen the sparkle in her eyes dim like the midnight clouds caressing the left cheek of the moon.

Her lips once smooth with the oil of affirmation and love had dried up, leaving her disappointed wondering if love's flame would ever dance again.

He should have noticed the youthful glow of her face fade as she struggled to stay in the chalk boundaries of her life’s… Continue

BE A VICTOR, NOT A VICTIM

First of all, thanks so much to everyone for their heartfelt responses to this matter. It has given me an unprecedented opportunity to get to know my new "friends" better. I appreciate the fact that so many of you took time out of your busy lives to share your insights and perspectives.

Advice on Exploring Erotica in Your Writing

MediaBistro's Morning Media Menu had a conversation with author Jamie Brenner about advice for writers looking to explore this newly crowded genre. An excerpt from Brenner: My first erotic novel came out two years ago. The landscape feels completely different. There is not just the hope to reach a mainstream audience with erotic novel, but the expectation that success is reaching everyone, not just the genre readers. Fifty Shades of Grey really raised the bar for that. At the same time, working…See More
