I'm looking to start my own publishing company. I wanna know if there's anyone that could give me some information on starting one.

I've tried to reach out to other publishers but no one will give me any advice or info. So if there's anyone that could give me some advice on starting a publishing company or the first steps to owning your own company, I would really appreciate it.

Thank you!

Dominique

Good question, now I have a few:

Why do you want to start this business - Just to publish your own books or to publish a certain type or genre of book?
Are you prepared for the commitment required to start a business in hard times?
Are you properly capitalized?
Have you started a business outline or plan?
Do you have the time to do this now?

Right now I'm just looking for information to see if this is something I really wanna do. I'm looking for all pros and cons that publishers can give.

I just started my own publishing company and wrote a book that contains a lot of information that can help you. The book is called Make One Million Dollars in One Year and Create Your Own Economy. You can order a copy from my website at www.evrrp.com I use Lulu as my distributor. If you have other questions you can can e-mail me.

I'm looking for advice, start up info, to see if this is something I can really commit to. I'm really just wondering how people get started in this field.

I think if you can answer those questions, you will have a leg up. People start in this field for various reasons - love of books, love of editing, or they just want to publish their own books. You haven't answered that question for yourself so it's difficult to give you an answer not knowing where you are coming from. Pros and cons depend on your background and readiness to start a business. Start up is like any other business - difficult when under capitalized.

Answer the 'why?' first. Then comes the 'how'.

Some of the best information you can get is in books on self publishing. Even if you are doing books by other authors, the process is still the same. If you need some titles, let me know and I will send you some.

Thank you so much. I've actually did that. I've went to the library and just browsed different books to give me information on how to get started with a publishing company and it was really helpful. Doing my research really got my mind in perspective because I now know what it takes to get it done and now I'm deciding if this is something I want to do now that I know what comes with it.

Thank you!!!!

Dominique,

Interested in starting a publishing company? Many self published authors (like myself) have done so as well. When I first started writing, I had no idea I'd start a publishing company.

Look at some examples of how some book publishers got their start. Ever heard of Teri Woods? She has her own company, is a successful writer and has others who write books for her company.

She started out as an independent author. She had to become a book publisher.

You're starting a company... so, you need to deal with basic company paperwork. Incorporation and taxation issues are important.

Look at the publishers you like and try to get as much details about them as you can.

Dominique,

Additionally, you may not find the information you're looking for here. So many of the writers here (myself included) are use to being pimped by publishing companies and even if we're self published, most would jump at the opportunity to sign with a major publisher.

You want to own your own company. You should look at people who have been successful in fields similar to publishing. I know that you've heard of Jermain Dupri and Russell Simmons. Both have excellent books (in terms of entrepreneurship) on the market.

For instance... Dupri still hits up the clubs to see what is hot in the street. To see what people are dancing too. As a publisher, you'd have to do the same in a sense. What authors are hot, what are people reading in the streets? Who is the next Teri Woods? Find them and sign them first!
