What would you do if you could do what you’ve always dreamed about?  That’s what happens in Leaving England by Carole Hart.

In this well written and often humorous memoir, Carole Hart and her husband are finally free of their everyday obligations.  We travel with the Hart’s as they make their way to start a new life in Cornwall.

They arrive with their cat, Norman; they settle in the town of St. Columb and buy a house to start their dream job.  They seem to have taken a step back in time.  When they finally find a house to buy, whatever can go wrong, does go wrong.    While Carole and her husband are busy trying to get their new house repaired and in order, they decide that they have to meet the people of the town.  After all, if they are going to start a business they should make themselves known.  Right?  The people they encounter are quirky characters and Ms. Hart paints each one with humor and gives them their own distinctive color and personalities.

When Carole and her husband finally open their business, they are host to some very quirky visitors from all over the world.  Each visitor has his or her own idiosyncrasies that drive the Hart’s to learn more patience.

I highly recommend Leaving England.  This memoir is filled with a gentleness that isn’t normally found in today’s world.  That’s because this reviewer has learned that Cornwall has held on to its old traditions.  I have also learned that even though Cornwall is a part of England, the residents don’t quite think they are.  So, make yourself a cup of tea, curl up in your favorite chair and read Leaving England.  The only thing that could make this easy reading book better would be a cozy afghan along with a hot cup of tea!

I just came from Holsworthy in Devon.  I also visited Bude , Exeter, and Cloverlly

Hi Corey,

Are the places you visited in England?  If they are, are they close to or part of Cornwall?  From the picture Ms. Hart paints of the area, it must be a beautiful place.  Thanks for commenting!

Deb :-)

Bude and Cloverlly were in Cornwall.  Holsworthy and Exeter are in Devon.  Lots of beautiful scenery!!

Hi Corey,

Ms. Hart says in her book how beautiful & scenic that area is.  Happy New Year!
