Free Stock Photo Images
Whether for an important article, essay or news report, finding quality images and photos can be a challenge, let alone finding images that are free to use, with no licensing fees or royalty payments. With this in mind, we are pleased to provide you with a list of 40 online sources of free images. Note that all of the sites listed below offer at least some free images, though some sites may require you to credit the photographer or site as a condition of use. Please review the image use policy before downloading photos from the sites listed. We hope you enjoy the selections and hope you find the list of free image sites to be useful!
Note that many of the images may be large enough to use in a print layout, yet may be saved as 72 DPI. Click here for an explanation on saving them as 300 DPI in Photoshop.
1. AarinFreePhoto.com - Offers over 950 free images for personal and commercial use. You can download and use their images on your web site, print ads, brochures or any end products. Aarin's terms of use can be found here.
2. AMG Media - Free Photos for you to use. All digital photos (taken with Nikon Coolpix) are 72dpi. You can use any of the royalty free photos shown if proper credit is given to the photographer. AMG's license agreement can be found here.
3. Art Favor - Art Favor is the collection of vector and flash clipart, sounds, fonts, photos, pictures and images for designers, flash programmers and those interested in creative web design.
4. Amazing Textures - A texture library with hundreds of free textures, high-resolution textures, images, backgrounds, wallpapers and texture maps. Note the collection of tiled textures in addition to the most popular textures chosen by users.
5. Burning Well -Burning Well is an archive of public domain (free for any use) images. You can download, copy and use the photos found here for any purpose.
6. Big Foto - A royaltyfree photo agency offering free use of all pictures (with link or reference).
7. Buzz Net - Buzznet.com is a photo-sharing community that features an easy-to-use interface and powerful tools to create your own photoblog.
8. Barry's Free Photos - Free Stock Photos - Barry’s Free Photos offers over 2,300 FREE Stock Photos in several categories. Barry's image use policy can be found here.
9. Creating Online - Free stock photos for personal or commercial use.
10. Cepolina - An album of over 3,500 free photos available to download.
11. Creative Commons Search - Although copyright applies to many images found on the web, this site helps you find photos, for free use.
12. Copyright Free Photo Archive - A community-indexed photo archive offering more than 27,000 free photos and images, consisting of over 2.5 GB of data.
13. DHD Multimedia Gallery - The Gallery is a selection of real-world-derived stock photography, clip-art, sounds and video clips. Please read the terms and conditions before downloading.

20. Geek Philosopher - Geek Philosopher’s stock photo, background, and desktop wallpaper collections are free to use. However, please read the about page for certain restrictions.
21. Free Foto - FreeFoto.com is the largest collection of free photographs for private non-commercial use on the Internet.
22. From Old Books - Over 800 scanned images, engravings and pictures from old books. They are all public domain (copyright-free, out of copyright) unless otherwise noted.
23. Holy Land Photos - Free Hi-Resolution Photographs of the Holy Lands. Please read the permission to use before downloading.
24. Image Base - Free Stock Photography with categories such as Nature / Outdoor, People, City, & Concept / Object.
25. Image After - Image After is a large online free photo collection. You can download and use any image or texture from the site and use it in your own work, either personal or commercial. Please see the terms of use.
26. Morgue File - A place to keep post-production materials, an inactive job file. The morgue file contains free high resolution digital stock photography for either corporate or public use. Site terms can be found here.
27. Majestic Imagery - Free Royalty Free Stock Photographs - for all your graphic needs. All that is needed is a link back if you use them on a web page project.
28. Pics4Learning - The Pics4Learning collection is intended to provide copyright friendly images for use by students and teachers in an educational setting. Please review the Image Use Policy.
29. Pixel Perfect Digital - A large image archive of free photos and images to use on your blog, web site, or graphic design projects, etc.
30. PD Photo - PDPhoto.org is a repository for free public domain photos. Unless something is clearly marked as being copyrighted, you can assume it is free to use.
31. Photo Rogue - You can request a picture of anything you want, and volunteer photographers will attempt to actually take the picture you want. It’s entirely free, although there's no guarantee.
32. Pixel Bag- The images are free to use when credit is given to the photographer.
33. Photo Case - Photos from this site may be used for commercial and noncommercial, self-contained, original work. You can download up to three photos per day unless you purchase download credits through its shopping section.

37. UnProfound - This collection of photos is for anyone to use for almost any purpose. You cannot redistribute the photos individually or en masse, as photos, to any other web sites or offline buyers.
38. Woophy - Woophy has a collection of over 23,000 photos from around the world with over 4,300 cities represented. The terms of use can be found here.
39. Yellowstone National Park - Over 9,000 digital images of Yellowstone National Park with captions. Read over the site's FAQs about the image use policy.
40. YotoPhoto - Yotophoto is a search engine for finding free-to-use stock photographs and images. The index consists of over 150,000 creative commons, public domain, GNU FDL, and various other free images. Photo licensing help can be found here.
To save a 72 DPI image in Photoshop as 300 DPI, without resampling:
1. In Photoshop, choose Image > Image Size.
2. Uncheck the Resample Image box at the bottom.
3. Change the Resolution from 72 to 300. Click OK.
4. If the image is currently in RGB format, choose Image > Mode > CMYK Color.
5. Save the Image as a TIFF file (Save As).
