Dr. Niama L. Williams is the author of nine books, each describing her survival of trauma and celebrating those who have assisted her as she's walked her path. Read the latest on her personal story at Tim Hooker's SushiTuesday,

THE JOURNEY: Is the drop-dead gorgeous psychiatrist in love or is some other far more nefarious plot afoot? The Journey pulls us in and leaves us wondering. Told she was schizophrenic at 19, it takes a trip to an unexpected homeland for the real truth to sink in: she is not crazy, but psychic.
Raised by a degreed registered nurse and thus devoted to Western medicine, the hardest person to convince is herself, but by the end of Detective Fiction, the game between her self, her spiritual helpers, and the doppelganger who refuses to leave her alone becomes cold, calculating, and a clear risk to her survival.
SOJOURN IN CALIDIA:
She's on the run and she doesn't quite know who is pursuing Is it the man with the unrecognizable face? The boy with the eyes that terrify?
The man dressed as a campesino who doubles as The Interrogator's assistant?
Who IS pursuing Cassie Daniels and what is her real mission in Calido?
Sojourn in Calidia takes us through urban landscape, steamy jungle and a variety of human consciousnesses--some of which we hope never to see again--as we tease out this young Black woman's journey in a land not of her birth but
definitely of her spirit.
When did you begin writing?
Fifth or sixth grade.
What drew you to this particular genre?
Life experience. It took me almost 40 years to understand and accept that the voices I heard and the strong intuition/inner voice that had always guided me were gifts/ESP and not insanity.
Why do you think speculative fiction is important?
Any and all expansions of the imagination are critical for the adequate development of the soul and the spirit. If we cannot imagine, we cannot envision, and if we cannot envision, we soon lose all hope. Can you tell that I am a lit professor? :-)
What are the key elements or literary devices you use in your fiction (Ex. vampirew,
space or time travel, first contact, Armageddon, etc.)?
Second sight, deep intuition, visions, angels, spirits, voices.
What are your plans for future books?
I am midway through another memoir, this one about love, and there is a biography of one of my mentors that I would like to research and write.
Favorite author, book and/ movie:
Favorite author: Toni Cade Bambara; favorite book: Bambara's THE SALT EATERS;
favorite movie: The Wide, Wide World starring Vincent D'Onofrio and
Renee Z.
What do readers need to know about you and your works?
That there is always blood on the page and that is as it should be. If as an author I do not risk, what of value do I have to communicate?
