Never Let Go of My Hand is a modern day African American classic. Kerry E. Wagner’s unique writing style reminds me of the African American writers of our past. Claude Brown, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Jean Toomer… These writers wrote from the gut, from the pain, and the struggle. Kerry E. Wagner writes in the same fashion. He writes about responsibility, integrity, and redemption. Kerry E. Wagner is a disciplined writer in that he remains true to his art of telling a story; his way. As an avid reader, I recall a moment in time when my father first introduced me to Alice Walker’s Color Purple. I had a very difficult time getting passed the jargon used. Being a native New Yorker, I couldn’t comprehend the southern flavor and felt that the book was poorly written. I was fourteen years old at the time. My father insisted that I continue reading the book, because he knew once I finished reading it, I would appreciate “writing as an art form’. Never Let Go of My Hand is to be appreciated as a piece of art.
I would like to end my comment in the words of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., one of the most important African American literary scholars, “My desire has been to allow the black tradition to speak for itself about its nature and various functions, rather than to read it, or analyze it, in terms of literary theories borrowed whole from other traditions, appropriated from without.”

I have no idea how many 1000's of books I have read, however I can say there is no Author that has affected me with his words like Kerry E Wagner!!! Reality is not always pleasant or perfect and in “Never Let Go of My Hand” Kerry shows us that in a way that we can relate to. I mostly read for pleasure, it’s my escape but when I come across something that makes me THINK!! That is a special gift!! The relationship between a Mother and Son is a bond that few can break. Kerry shows us just how true a Mothers (as well as Grandmothers) love is for her son. The reader has the privilege of seeing Eric begin to become a man. I am looking forward to more from Kerry E Wagner!!!

Quiet Storm (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
This book is not for the faint of heart. Being a single mother of two sons myself, the title and cover inscription "There is nothing like the bond between a mother and her son" immediately grabbed my attention. My initial expectation was a sweet, soft, gentle book about a mother and son. While certainly the case sometimes, the book also takes twists, turns and loops you never expect. The writer takes you on an emotional journey one would never imagine. There are now tear stained, feathered and weathered pages of my book as a result of the physical reaction experienced going through the journey with each character. The author brings you into the experience. This heart racing, heart wrenching story warrants a read from not just mothers, but anyone who has shared a bond with someone (long term or short) and endured ups, downs and all arounds with them. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story. I so look forward to the sequel.

Never Let Go of My Hand
Never Let Go Of My Hand is a compelling tell of a young mans struggle of lifes transformations. His journey challenges us to look inside ourselves and become renewed, enlighten, and accept that with every action taken in life, there is a chain reaction, sometimes causing conflict and pain, not only to ourselves, but to those who love us unconditonally.
This novel teaches us to hear, act upon, and learn from the wisdom of others, while believing in ourselves.
Mr. Wagner uses direct discription, powerful language, and motivating drive as a way of pushing his character into the reality of human kindness, forgivness and redemption. While the roll of family takes front and center in this story, it produces a balance that orders his character to submit to the quilt substain during his troubled youth, it also so offers, conflict, crisis and eventually, resolution.
Open up the pages and become apart of this man's life and how it relates to all of us who struggle to find ourselves and the goodness that lies within. Expect to be emotionally charged through his journey, while never letting go of his hand.

There is nothing like the love a child gets from mom and that will be the message as you sit down and take this journey with Kerry E. Wagner's sophomore effort. Readers will get up close and personal with character Eric Payson.
This book does not just tell a story but as each page unfolds the author does a phenomenal job of keeping the reader engrossed . There are so many different feelings and emotions displayed throughout the novel but one thing that is certain with love all things are possible.
There are so many key words that come into play as the story unfolds- strength, courage, redemption but most importantly responsibility. Just that kind of book that has something for everyone, truly a story you will be able to relate to.
Never Let Go of My Hand is definitely destined to become a favorite for its accuracy of passion carefully placed on each page. Readers will not be disappointed and if you were a fan from the author's debut novel, you will be equally pleased with his latest literary effort. Not only will you see more enthusiasm, you will see the growth in his writing.
Never Let Go of My Hand is a MUST read for all mothers young and old. This was a book that will have you laughing and crying and though some might say that's a bad thing but in regards to Never Let Go of my Hand- It's all good.

What a lesson well learn from reading this book. Once you start reading you will not put this book down until you know what happen next and what happen up to the end. We can learn from reading this book. Kerry did a wonderful job about how close a son and mother can be but he also show that we do take life for granted and also our love ones. We loose focus in ourselves and forget where we came from. Being a single mother raising my children especially my son who is now grown, I can say this touch my heart and I am very bless and proud of the way my life with my children turn out.
This is a wonderful read, a lesson we all needs to look at because there are time we loose faith and forget the value of those around us that love us the most. I am waiting on the next book that Kerry Wagner going to put out. Never Let Go Of My Hand is a book that can be pass down to generation to read and understand the meaning behind this story.

Can you answer yes to the question: Have I done right by all that have put faith in me and loved me unconditionally? If not, this book is definitely for you. It is one of redemption and unconditional love, but also a story detailing the love a mother has for her son that is unrelenting and that grows stronger by the minute.
I had the privilege of being one of the very first people to get my hands on Never Let Go Of My Hand in its rawest form of publication. From page one when I was introduced to Alvin Sanders Jr., I was hooked and intrigued to find out what would happen next with the seeds that Alvin planted before he ascended from earth. Would his son, Eric Payson, be cursed with death and drive the same dagger through his mother's heart when she found him near death on the cold pavement in a pool of his own blood, in the middle of the night? Or would he grow to the true potential of a Payson?
Never Let Go of my Hand by Kerry E. Wagner is a coming of age story that will make you laugh, it will make you cry, but best of all it will make you think. I took away a strong understanding that we must love our family while they are here because flowers are no good to us when we are dead. Let your mother see you blossom today!
I know the author says this book is about the love between a mother and a son, but as a woman I can relate to many of the issues that Eric deals with as his single mother searches for a man to love her. If you like coming of age stories or historic African American tales, this book is for you.
Note to author: Keep inspiring your readers through the Kerry E. Wagner experience.

I found myself, hooked from the very first page of the book. I felt connected to the character instantly, and was able to visualize from the descriptive writing of the story, exactly what the character was feeling. Instant Talent of Kerry E. Wagner.. BRAVO. Compelling You to HOLD ON!, August 26, 2009
By The1Essence, Author (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
"Never Let Go of My Hand" is a powerful story about one young mans struggles with love, life, and inner peace while metamorphosing from a small child to a grown man. Yet, as I read this book, I imagined Mr. Wagner's life, could possibly be the story of many of our young men today. On completion "Never Let Go of My Hand", I realized that is exactly the thought the author wanted to provoke in his readers.
"Never Let Go of My Hand", draws you into the inner turmoil, mental struggles, triumphs, and loves both lost and found with a vividly honest and sometimes amusing recant of the author's life. I often found my self struggling then emerging with the author from a dark situation and beaming with pride in his accomplishments. An author whose words allow you to live "in" their story has truly created a work of art worth sharing.
More important than the bookish enjoyment I received from reading "Never Let Go of My Hand" are the author's two simple but poignant messages that "I" derived from it. "A woman can't teach a boy to be a man" & "no amount of money or gifts can replace loving and nurturing your children".
I want to add from a personal level; that I would like to say to Kerry E. Wagner; thank-you. I am sooo deeply grateful for your book "Never Let Go of My Hand". I bought the book simply as a suggested "good read", but it has truly deepened the relationship between me and my own son. As much as I thought I was paying close attention to him, "Never Let Go of My Hand" opened my eyes to the fact that there may be so much about him I didn't know. So I shared this book with my son. During conversation with him about the book, I found my son was paying just as much attention to my "actions" as I was to his. Now, we talk on an entirely different level. I hear things that would have made me cringe and call his dad in a panic before reading this book. But, now I truly listen to him, AND watch the way I react to him. In turn, I have noticed he has been taking less for granted (he's still a teen) and makes an intensified effort to DO more and ASK for less. I knew my son was a good kid before, but now I admire him as much as I have out found that he has admired me; Thank-you Mr. Wagner.

I loved "She Did That" but I fell in love with "Never Let Go Of My Hand". Being a single mom myself I could definitely relate to the connection the mom had with her son. We just know when something is not right with our men. Kerry made me laugh, he made me cry, he gave me insight to what they may be going through as they make that transition from boys to men.
The day this book arrived I sat down, started reading and had a hard time putting it down. Kerry is excellent at making you think, everything he writes has a message. The message here love, respect and accountability. I love to read things that stir up emotion, whatever emotion that may be at the time. Never Let Go Of My Hand definitely does a lot of stirring. Excellent read...

I have always loved and respected my mother for the sacrifices that she has made for me and my sister. "Never Let Go of My Hand" truly describes the love that Mothers' have for their children- A love that is unwavering and everlasting. Kerry has truly captured the essence of what real love is; A love that can never be replaced by money, fame, and/or sex. I have yet to read another book that is so relatable to not only myself, but to many others in generations before and after my own.
Overwhelmingly Positive Experience, June 24, 2009
By Dena Lewis (Houston, Tx) - See all my reviews
Just as I expected, not to be out done by his previous smash hit "She Did That". Kerry serves up another winner with his second novel "Never Let Go Of My Hand" With this book I know now that I have become a life long Kerry E. Wagner fan.
I know how many will try to discredit Mr. Wagner's talent solely based on his first novel because I was one of the unbelievers. Although "She Did That" was entertaining, raunchy, and funny, I thought it was a bit crude and would only appeal to those who love all that juicy dirt. And I wondered if he could bring anything of substance to his work. All this and more was answered with "Never Let Go Of My Hand".
This book is great in so many ways, it's the perfect follow up to his first novel. It shows Kerry's range and ability as an author and last but not least, it's a beautiful story, it's something we all can relate to. We all have Mother's, some of us are Mother's and we've all disappointed them in some way or another. And through all of it our Mother's have stood by us. So in that sense this book is all of our story. Whether it's the bond between mother and son, daughter, children etc. We all can relate and that's why I love this book. I truely learned something from this story and sorry if I step on any toes but I think it far surpassed "She Did That". This is my kind of novel!
If you are a Mother you need to read this book, if you have a Mother you need to read this book, if you had a Mother but she's passed you need to read this book, if you're an expecting Mother you need to read this book. This is a beautiful, heartfelt, geniune, memoire (if you will) to all parents. I was pleasantly surprised by this novel, I was both entertained and inspired, it was truely a positive experience.
To anyone who doubted Kerry E. Wagner's creativity, ability or sencerity... READ THIS BOOK!

This book intrigued me so much I could not put it down! This story of a young man's journey into adulthood as he relates to the women in his life, especially his mother and grandmother, was such a great read that had me turning page after page with great anticipation! Also, a mother of sons, I know first-hand of the unbreakable bond between a mother and her sons! No matter where he is, what he is doing, you feel it deep in your soul! If he is sick, you are sick, if he is hurtig, you are hurting, if he is in trouble, you just know it and most of all you are there when he needs you! However, as a mother, I havel also learned when to step in and when to step back to allow my sons to grow into fine young men. This book speaks directly to this aspect--the struggles and many trials a boy goes through to become a man in today's society. This book especiallty addresses how difficult it is for a young black young man to make it. Kerry E. Wagner has captured in his own special form of written word, and through the eyes of a black man, how tremendously hard it really is. I highly recommend this book as required reading for any mother of boys! Keep the hits coming, Kerry!

As I was reading this book, I did not know what to expect. Kerry has a way with words. He can make you laugh and cry all at the same time. As I read the book I started to have an understanding as to what a young man goes through when it come to dealing with a single mother. I went through so many emotions just when you dont expect something funny you get it. When you least expect it Eric will bring you to tears. This story is about that unconditional love that never dies. Men don't like to share their feelings at times. Eric gave me a glimpse of how a young man thinks and feels about his mother. By the time I finish reading this book I had a clear understanding as to why noone can break that bond between a mother and her son.

When reading this book, I had no idea what I could possibly expect. This book was ultimately a master piece waiting to happen. This book touched my soul in more ways than one. You automatically feel as if you are in the book with Eric. In my own experience of mess ups, heartaches, etc., I know what it is like to always go back to my momma and make sure that i know that, her HAND is always there. You almost have to put yourself in Eric's shoes to almost feel that connection between him and those important women in his life. You walk away with this book feeling, nourished, emotional, moved, blessed, encouraged, and matured. Kerry Wagner, made you feel that connection between that maternal instinct that is almost necessary between Mother, grandmother, God Mother, or whoever took on that challenge to become one with you and always GOT your back when no one else did. This book is a must have, must read, and the MOST cherished book in my african american book collection.

I was drawn to this novel the minute I started reading. Kerry E. Wagner's gift of writing has a way of drawing the reader into the story as if you were there. While reading, there were times I would burst into laughter, and there were times I cried. I cried because I'm a mother of one son, I felt the pain. I felt the undying love a mother has for her son. Readers will be touched beyond what is expected, because just when you think everything is going to be alright, something else happens. I feel privileged to have this novel, and look forward to more of Kerry E. Wagner's gift.

There is no surprise to anyone on myspace that I am a loyal friend, supporter and fan of Kerry E Wagner and loved his book "She Did That". Just so ya know, I loved his next book too. "Never Let Go of My Hand" was more than I expected it to be and the experiences of his character were life changing for me as a reader as well as a mother. I can't begin to find the words of how this happened but I see things in a different light when I think about both of my sons and the type of bond that we have. It makes more sense now some how. Thanks Kerry. As you already know....I aint never lettin' go.

When I first began to read Never Let Go of My Hand I had no idea what to expect. As I begin to read this book I was totally hooked and on the edge of my seat as to what was going to happen next. It was gripping, fascinating and mesmerizing but definitly demonstrates the true talent of Kerry and his ability to bring out raw emotions in his characters. I was amazed how the story line revealed the true love and dedication that mothers have for their sons even through all of the anguish that sometimes families go through. This reading was definitely an emotional ride but worth every minute from laughing to crying I was amazed. Truly enjoyed this book and look forward to future works.

Never Let Go of My Hand is a modern day African American classic. As I turned each page I was quickly reminded of another modern classic of the black experience, "Manchild in the Promised Land, written by Claude Brown in 1965. Never Let Go of My Hand is written with brutal honesty and a compassion that highlights the bond between a mother and her son... As a mother I related to the anguish and pain the mother and grandmother went through as they loved the men in their lives holding onto their hands, cheerleading for their success, being by their sides, never letting go, always pulling for… Never Let Go of My Hand is another depiction of black love and is a must read for years to come.

Most people say a writer relates from an imagination deep within or just plain talented in their own rights. I believe Kerry Wagner demonstrates both of these characters in his book Never Let Go of My Hand. He has given us the belief that GOD in his wisdom has placed Kerry in a category that belongs to him alone. In his book Never Let Go of My Hand I discovered that we all have met or can relate to Eric Payson in some form or fashion. Eric lived life on his own terms, whether it was wrong or right. He stepped from muddy water into quicksand and stumbled from childhood to manhood without taking the advice from his loving mother or grandmother. But as life keeps happening and keeps given him the beating he deserves, he makes a turn for the better. I truly believe in life we have catalyst that causes us to change the direction of our lives and we start to live the life that GOD intended us to live. Kerry Wagner reminds me in this incredible book, To live Life full and Die empty.

Excellent follow up to "She Did That!" This novel showcases Wagner's uncanny ability to paint a complete picture in the reader's mind while tugging at her heart strings. The characters are very real and remind us of our ever present weaknesses & desires to achieve more in this life. He also drives home the reality that one must live today because there is no promise of a tomorrow. Wagner has a knack for making his audience fall in love with and root for his protagonist who is forever the underdog. I found myself wanting to both protect and direct Eric as Wagner took me on this journey which coursed every one of my emotions. A raw and talented storyteller, Wagner is more than a movement & greater than a force! Kudos...
