Agents of Literary Change

It’s all over the news and the official position of the NY Post is that “Al Sharpton is a publicity opportunist”

So the question in the media has become, is Al Sharpton an opportunist, or do we as Black folk have a right to be outraged?

For those that don’t watch the news, here is a link to the actual cartoon (see http://primebuzz.kcstar.com/?q=node/17243)

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says the other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."

Now we won’t talk about the NY Post being owned by Rupert Murdoch of Fox News….we all know their stand on political and racial issues.

But as Rev. Sharpton says; given the historic racist attacks on African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys this cartoon is very troubling.

Oh, and just so you know, the NY Post claims of the cartoon being a clear parody of a current news event…to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut….Doesn’t Hold Water!!!

A. There is no reference, symbol, or badge of the Connecticut police dept.
B. The women that was attacked is nowhere in the picture
C. The cartoon was placed opposite of a picture of President Obama signing the Stimulus Bill

For all practical purposes this could have been a picture of any number of unarmed Black men that have been shot down in the streets by the NY police dept.

So I’m asking you, is the infamous cartoon a parody or a call for assassination??? Are you outraged or do you think it’s funny?

Peace and Gods Blessings,

Hi Jim,

I saw this earlier when I was at work. I would have to say that this angered me, that despite what this country is going through, people still try to find humor in putting someone down, someone who is doing their best in less than a month to shape this country around to where it needs to be. It is quite obvious what this 50 cents or 75 cents tabloid was trying to say. This isn't about race, it is about ignorance. Ignorance is such an ugly thing and goes both ways: 1) The people who are so ignorant, that they will do anything and everything to tear a person down. 2) The people who are so ignorant that they choose to ignore situations such as this and figure, "Oh well, it's just satire." But it is not satire. And true indeed there has been other jokes about other political figures, however, this is insane. To refer a monkey with something so serious as the Stimulus bill, the one thing that is going to try to save people's butts, put food in their children's mouths, affordable housing, college education funds for their children, and last but not least, a decent paying job, is the worse reference a person can pathetically think of at a time like this. People are so ignorant. If this is that newspaper's way of keeping their business afloat, I think they've got it twisted. For those that think this was satire, or a soft-felt joke, well it's not funny. For those that say we shouldn't take this so serious, people poke fun at other political or public figures all the time, yada, yada, yada, then they need to go back eight years to see why we even have a Stimulus bill in the first place. Then there wouldn't be any so-called "soft-felt" jokes.

Peace Out,

Jada

PS- I respect Al Sharpton, however, he does not need to make this bigger than what it is. The one reason why President Obama is President, is because he relied on "The Audacity of Hope" not cheap slander to get him to where he is. In my book, he is the epitome of, "Never let them see you sweat." He is human yes, and it may have made him upset if he heard about this through his Cabinet, but I think he is more concerned with how to shield this type of stupidity from his girls and too busy working than worrying about what a tabloid is saying about him.

Isn't it so amazing that when one is doing something so right, someone will come along to try to make things look like they're all wrong. This picture depicts just that...But, "I think President Obama is off to a good start."
(Quoted by President Clinton in the DCExpress Newspaper, dated 2/17/09)

Join The Color of Change.org in demanding that The Post issue an apology for the decision and their callousness, and fire the editor who allowed this cartoon to go to print.

I believe it is referred to as morbid humor. I would not take it personal because when you consider no one escapes the morbid facination of cartoonist. Remember when the NASA astronauts exploded on take off ? It did not take cartoonist long to create a mordbid angle from that tragedy. NASA = Need Another Seven Astronauts.
