Securing Public or Private Speaking Engagements

Hello everyone, my question is three fold, what ideas can be offered when looking to secure speaking engagements that would allow you to speak on various subjects and possible chance to sell or promote you writing?

Second, what are some of the negatives to be aware of or avoided when looking for these opportunities?

Should you even bring up monetary compensation? I planned to do many of mine for free unless they are offering money..

I am in the process of contacting past schools and organizations in areas where I live and teach and places I used to live. In hope to set up a couple of opportunities to speak and offer my work..

You should never sell yourself or product for free!
You should provide them with as much information as possible.
do not provide too much upfront information
doing something for free will not be beneficial for your family or anything else.

You should never sell yourself or product for free! makes no sense and does not require an exclamation point.

The term sell does not associate with the term free. If something is for "sell" it is considered "sold" if purchased. If something is "free" it is considered given away or offered without charge therefore negating the term sell.

If you are paying your consultant to advise you to offer up as much information as possible but her admitted way of doing business dictates that she do not provide you much upfront information then what's wrong with this picture?.

"Doing something for free will not be beneficial for your family or anything else" If that is the advice from your consultant then shame on the outreach ministries, child advocates, concerned parents, groups, organizations and others that give free speeches and seminars to other people, churches, schools, clubs ,organizations or companies at any given time or day of the week.

BE ADVISED
There is some advice that should be sold, there is some advice that should be given freely and there is some advice that is totally worthless.

The advice offered by the consultant in this response should neither be sold nor given away because the advice from this consultant as rendered in her reply to this discussion is double standarded, confusing, without merit and totally worthless.

In addition she adds insult to injury to her advice by adding exclamation points that are totally without merit and wholly unnecessary.

I am not attacking you personally nor attempting to offend anyone in particular, however you do represent yourself as a literary consultant and therefore as a member of B.A.S. in good standings I am well within my boundaries to comment on the received and perceived quality of your advice as rendered to me or others via your written replies and/or discussions.

WOW,, Thank You guys,, but I am going to leave this line of questions alone. I am not sure exactly what I might have eased into. But I see there are some strong thoughts going back and forth over some questions that I only wanted some suggestions on.. Its really not that serious and I don't like to be in the middle of anything that produce positivity.

There are areas that I agree and disagree with in both responses.. However, with the level to where things declined. I am going leave this alone. If I need any farther information. I'll contact you both directly.
