Hey Jill - **jumping up and down waving feverishly**

I have never used Poetry.com but there is a lot of bad press out there for them.
According to Wikipedia: "The Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland classifies the business as a vanity publisher, and notes that the quality of the poetry submitted to them "does not appear to be a significant consideration for selection for publication." Italics are mine.

And a bit slow to come up because it's a Tripod free page - PoetryNotCom: http://poetrynotcom.tripod.com/

This is one of the reasons I try to keep up with the latest poetry anthologies and contests for BAS members. Check out the new Anthologies and Literary Mag News article forum - we posted at least ten new ones just today!

I have before, and they send you info stating that your piece is selecting to appear in an anthology, but you have to buy it at $65.00 a book. It was also an article (I'll have to find it) that an entire 5th grade class submitted poems, and they all received letters stating that their poetry is selected to enter into a $10,000 prize. I've seen others receive supposed "Editor's Choice Awards" for pieces that were average. In short- it's a gimmick.

AYA PRESS BOOKS is pleased to announce its first annual poetry contest, open to poets of African American or Hispanic descent, ages 18 and over. The winning poets will be featured in the anthology: Soul Poets: The Outstanding New African American and Hispanic Poets of 2009 to be published November 2008. Poets may submit up to five poems in any style, theme or genre. The entries do not have to be typed, but they must be printed legibly. (All entries in cursive will be automatically disqualified.) The deadline for submissions has been extended to June 1, 2008. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY June 1, 2008. NO EXCEPTIONS. To enter, send your poetry, with the $25 entry fee to AYA PRESS BOOKS, POB 721, Uniondale, NY 11553. ALL SUBMISSIONS MISSING THE ENTRY FEE WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED. INCLUDE A SELF ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE IF YOU WANT YOUR SUBMISSIONS RETURNED. IF YOU HAVE WRITTEN IN SPANISH, YOU MUST ALSO SUBMIT THE TRANSLATION! The winners of the contest will be announced on August 15, 2008. A winner's list will be sent to all entrants. I WILL ANNOUNCE THE SPECIAL GUEST JUDGE SOON. THIS IS SOMEONE YOU ALL WILL KNOW AND RESPECT. THIS IS MY WAY OF FIGHTING THE SCAMMERS.

I hate to inform you, but you will never get rich writing poetry. As a publisher, author, and former editor at Essence Magazine, I will tell you that outright. People write poetry for the love of it. Very few people, if any, make a living writing poetry. Most poets have a regular job. For instance, Nikki Giovanni is a professor. Maya Angelou's revenues come from her autobiographical novels. Poets will never make money writing poetry and if that disappoints people, then they shouldn't be writing poetry, but something else more lucrative! We have to have realistic expectations. When's the last time you saw a book of poetry on a bestseller list? If any company promises you they will make you money or famous because of a poem you wrote...don't believe it!

OH boy do I know that. I am HUGE Fan of Nikki Giovanni .

I write poetry for the LOVE of it to me it is Poetic therapy .I write just as I breath. It flows from within my Heart & Soul.I enjoy sharing,I also Moderate several poetry groups encouraging, sharing, and reading FABULOUS poetry from fellow poets/poetesses.

I am NOT in it for the money or anything else other than above.

PEACE,1LOVE & BLESSINGS Jill

Yep, the power of "facts" on the internet. Ain't it grand? People take forwards as gospel. Do you all also believe that Barack Obama shouldn't be president because he's not an American citizen? It' says he's not on the internet! I kinda wanted this…
