How about a credit card processing machine? Have any of you gone that route? What do you suggest?

You might want to go to a bank for example "first citzen back" in your city. I understand from artist. You start a account like for small business you pay $30.00 and let them know you may make no more then specific amount at best and that you like credit card machine. YOu can use it at events and vendors. She actually take credit cards to sell your items and she would call her bank to confirm the amount. I image it would work for small business online as well. I did an impromptu book signing at a women's group fundraising event and I had to turn away three potentials buyers of my novel for lack of credit card purchase access! I've looked into the option with Sam's Club (a warhouse store much like Kosco) & it worked to be too expensive for a service that I am not using on a monthly basis. I am now looking into my bank's setup to do a price comparison.

For me, I am just getting into literary event participation (i.e. attending conferences, lit fests & expos). I am not yet in a position to do a selling/signing event more than every couple of months. Therefore, right now a credit card machine set up that has me confined to a 12 and beyond month contract is not economically feasible. But if you are doing signings/sellings every month or so...then obtaining an account for credit card purchases is definitely a serious option to consider.

My book is available on line, so if an event is held in a wireless (internet capable) building, then people can also purchase my book from the net to have it mailed directly to their home in 7-10 business days and get a free promotional t-shirt or they can buy it from me in person at an event and have it signed! This is just another option.

A more cost-effective and beneficial option may be to get an air card (wireless Internet access) for your laptop from one of the major carries such as AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc. This way you may process credit card orders from your website on location and with the air card you'll be able to have Internet access where ever you go. Another option is getting a iphone and processing the orders direct from your phone.

Technology is allowing us to by-pass some of the barriers we once needed to be efficient and more effective at lower cost. Putting an image of your book for your profile photo is a great way to market your book.
