TL James, born and raised in Houston, Texas, studied English at the University of Houston and Texas Southern University and graduated with an MBA from LeTourneau University, where she cultivated an interest in biblical studies. She often worked on her novel with her son tucked around her waist ( She found inspiration in the sound of his small steady breaths while he slept). After eight months of sleepless nights, The
MPire trilogy was completed.

Mallory Towneson Haulm, financial thaumaturge and consummate ladies man, brings the four horsemen to completion as he reluctantly embraces his destined charge as Death. While struggling to maintain his lavish façade, Mallory witnesses bits of his glamorous world slipping through his hands. How can he balance his earthly paradise with his diabolical calling of the earth's fate?
When did you begin writing? My earliest memories of writing were in Middle School. I remember keeping a journal and writing in it every day about stories about my family and the combating the peer pressures in school.
What drew you to this particular genre? I guess you can say my formative education drew me to this genre. I grew up reading the classics, such as, Chaucer, Shakespeare and different regional Mythology (Greek, Roman, Norse, and Chinese). They had a unique way of describing scenes, sights and characters through dialogue. It really fascinated me.
Why do you think speculative fiction is important?
Speculative fiction does not only tell a story, it leaves readers with questions. Can this really happen? Is it happening now? The story lives on beyond the finishing of the last chapter. And if the story is well written, it comes synced in the subconscious.
What are the key elements or literary devices you use in your fiction (Ex. vampires, space or time travel, first contact, Armageddon, etc.)?
The literary device I used was The Hour Horsemen of the Apocalypse. I interwoven an urban family saga with mythical and Shakespearian themes to form a unique story about a strong powerful and enchanting urban family, who just so happen to control the fate of the world.
What are your plans for future books?
Readers can expect Death Cometh in November 2008. In this installment, they will receive “personal invitation” inside the Haulm family. As Mallory reluctantly accepts his destined charged; readers will witness Mallory’s attempts to balance his earthly paradise with his diabolical calling. I have also penned The MPire Chronicles Series (2009/2010) to explore the other side of the family.
Favorite author, book and/ movie:
I have many favorite traditional authors such as Walter Mosley but since I am new to the publishing area I have expanded my reading selection to include new authors. I have read some great stories by Jean Holloway, Destiny Carter and P. Renee.
My favorite books, The Great Gatsby, Fahrenheit 451 and Devil in a Blue Dress.
My favorite movies are, The Lord of the Rings, “G” – urban remake of the Great Gatsby directed by Andrew Lauren and City of Angels.
What do readers need to know about you and your works?
I write for enjoyment. I write to laugh, cry and express my anger. I write for me. I think because I don’t write based on a formula or for someone else’s enjoyment, my story can’t fail because it is already a success in my heart.
Readers are the direct beneficiaries of my love for writing through my raw emotions. They benefit from my thorough research and how I cleverly interweave my ability to write literary classics with a contemporary swagger.
